The Scottish Gallery is delighted to present Waypoint, which is an exhibition of soda fired porcelain ceramics by Jack Doherty. In 2015 Waypoint was exhibited during the St Ives September festival across three historic sites in St Ives; fishermen’s chapels and traditional places of refuge.
By placing vessel forms within a specific site the intention was to create a thoughtful space in which to view the work with sensitivity to the context of place.
The aim was to highlight the cultural heritage of the fishing community connecting visitors and local audiences with these historic landmarks and narratives of faith, courage and epic voyages.
Jack Doherty has created a new family of work for The Scottish Gallery so that we can experience Waypoint in Edinburgh.

“I was born into a family of fishermen. As a child the harbour was the most fascinating place in my universe; a space charged with emotional content that shaped my world.”
Jack Doherty, 2015

2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the foundation of ‘Kilkenny Design Workshops’ (KDW), established by the Irish state in response to an influential design audit led by Kaj Franck. Over its 25-year life, KDW brought international designers and makers together to work with Irish craft and industry, joining craft and design in the development of a new idiom.

A key anniversary for Irish design, ‘Vernacular’ will present work from Ireland in which indigenous materials and processes combine in intelligent collaboration with design, to express an intrinsic and authentic element of Irish material culture. The exhibition will feature work by approximately 20 makers across furniture, wood, glass, ceramics, textile, basketry and stone, characterised by a deep engagement with the making process, and an authenticity that is materially embedded. The exhibition will launch at the London Design Festival in September 2013 as part of Tent London.
