As the nights draw in, this is traditionally a time to celebrate the elements of fire and light. My winter firings begin and end in the dark and the colours of my latest collection reflect that atmosphere. Through tones of smokey black, umber and grey giving way to flashes of electric blue, lemon and orange.

I have focussed on the textural surfaces of the forms. Building up layers of marks, first drawing and carving into the soft clay, then brushing thick porcelain slip underneath the copper. The pieces emerge engrained with the same patina as the interior of the kiln that has gradually built up over years of soda firing.

For this online collection I have made a series of tall vessels, ideal for displaying flowers, as well as a range of carved pod forms and a limited number of individual porcelain cups. 

For the first time I have included a selection of my Keeper pots. These tiny lidded vessels, small enough to cup in your hand, are containers for holding and keeping safe special thoughts and secrets. This concept of protection seems to me particularly appropriate in this difficult time as we keep our friends, families and loved ones safe and warm. I hope this new collection of my soda-fired porcelain pieces will bring joy.

NOTES FROM THE STUDIO

My work is made using one clay, one mineral and a single firing. Over time the process has become simpler and more refined in the belief that stripping away the unnecessary can produce work with complexity and depth. I enjoy the fluid, sensual nature of porcelain combined with the freedom of throwing and hand-building. My firing technique is unique; a vital and dynamic process using soda as a catalyst to create a reaction with copper to produce a subtle palette of colour and texture closely integrated with the form.
