Kiln Diary #18

Kiln Diary #18

As we head towards Midsummer it is the best time of year to fire the kiln. When I get into the flow and routine of the firing schedules I tune into the nuances and subtleties of colour and texture. Working in this way I am able to make small refinements and subtle changes to the firing cycle and kiln atmosphere. This will focus and sharpen the rich surfaces as well as add an element of play and risk that can produce some unexpected results. The work from this series of firings is destined to appear in two exhibitions, which by chance, both open in the same week.

The first of these is a solo exhibition at the Contemporary Ceramics Centre in London. There will be around 60 new pieces in selected groupings or families, ranging in scale from large bold Guardian Vessels to delicate hand sized Conical Forms. The exhibition opens in the physical gallery space on 23rd June but all the pieces will be available to purchase online and will be going live on Wednesday 22nd at 5pm. I hope that you enjoy the work and checkout their website to view the exhibition.

CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS CENTRE | London

23rd June – 16th July 2022

I am very pleased to be included in the exhibition ‘Material Landscape’ at Make Hauser and Wirth, Somerset alongside five other artist-makers. Make is a gallery dedicated to contemporary making and the crafted object. Material Landscape opens this Friday, and runs alongside, Sharing Form, a fabulous exhibition of sculptural works and drawings by Henry Moore displayed at the main Hauser and Wirth Gallery. I will be showing 6 new pieces including two Memory Jars with their multi-layered, carved surfaces that reflect my interest in materiality and form in landscape.

It is a pleasure to be showing my work in these galleries and hope that you will be able to make one of the venues. If you are in Cornwall and would like to visit Trinity House, my dedicated porcelain studio in Penzance, we always have a selection of work available to purchase. We are happy to meet you at the studio to show you around and talk about the work in person. Please do contact me directly to make an appointment jack@dohertyporcelain.com
