LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize 2020 in Craft and Design
Exhibition of Finalist Works
Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris
20st May – 11th July 2021
After receiving almost 3,000 submissions from 107 different countries across six continents, the shortlist of 30 finalists for the Loewe Foundation craft prize 2020 has just been announced. We are delighted that Jack’s Guardian Vessel has been selected by a panel of 10 leading experts and will be on show in the exhibition of finalist’s work at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris in May.
In a press statement released today Loewe said; “Many of the artists chosen this year use found and upcycled materials in their work, and concern for the natural world expressed through organic forms is an omnipresent theme,” demonstrating a common concern for the environment.
Over time Jack has honed his processes to become simpler and more refined in the belief that stripping away the unnecessary can produce work with complexity and depth. As close to a pure and sustainable ceramics practice as he can achieve using one clay, one colouring mineral and one single firing.
Launched in 2016, the prize was conceived by Loewe creative director, Jonathan Anderson to celebrate excellence, artistic merit and newness in modern craftsmanship. The aim of the LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize “seeks to acknowledge and support international artisans of any age or gender who demonstrate an exceptional ability to create objects of superior aesthetic value. By identifying work that reinterprets existing knowledge to make it relevant today while reflecting its maker’s personal language and distinct hand.”
From up-and-coming artists to well-established names, the 30 creatives selected for the fourth edition of the Prize present a varying array of objects that “prove a mastery of material, reimagine traditional techniques, and display a brave willingness to experiment,” explained an official statement. The final award will announced on May 19th.
“This year’s prize is more international than ever and the shortlisted works show a conversation across continents and generations, with young and established makers embracing and reinvigorating tradition in surprising and masterful ways,” said Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, executive secretary of the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize experts’ panel. “We are seeing works of the highest cultural and aesthetic ambition, inspired by themes that reflect the state of the world.”
