Kiln Diary #11

Kiln Diary #11

Time is racing by and August is slipping into September. We have had a busy month or two in the studio focussing on working towards my solo exhibition of new work at Beaux Arts Gallery, Bath opening next week, 4th September – 2nd October. I extend a warm welcome and an invitation to view the exhibition both in person and online. There will be an opening reception on Saturday 4th September 1 – 4 pm. Please do contact the gallery for further information at beauxartsbath.co.uk. Tel. 01225 464850.

Showing my work online is a wonderful way to connect with people and I love sharing my work with a wide audience. But it is also the experience of being able to touch, hold and engage with the physicality of an object in a gallery that cannot be replaced. So I am particularly excited about showing my new collection in the beautiful Beaux Arts Gallery space.

I have just opened the kiln after the last firing and it stopped me in my tracks. I was spellbound for a few moments as the dark, sultry blacks and flashes of blue from the soda were revealed. The vessels from this firing have a primal feel. My kiln is simple but very finely tuned and by making small adjustments to the temperature and atmosphere I can achieve a dynamic and dramatic range of tactile surface colour and smokey elemental textures. The resulting carved interiors and detail to the folded rims are beautifully highlighted.

I have had many enquiries about when work will be available on my own website. My energy has been concentrated throughout the Summer on making individual vessels for the Beaux Arts exhibition and this work will be available to purchase online through their gallery. My aim is now to create a body of work for an online Autumn collection in November. We will give plenty of notice about the date and opening time.

Our Trinity House Studio will always have a core of work in the gallery space and will continue to be open by appointment. If you are down in Cornwall we would be delighted to see you there but alternatively if you have a particular request, special occasion or a gift you would like to purchase then please do contact me directly and we would be pleased to arrange a virtual viewing of the work available.

In other news - I have enjoyed making a substantial selection of soda-fired Tableware for the beautiful Mo-no-ha Gallery in Seoul S. Korea. Making these functional pieces is a very different process from working on my individual porcelain vessels. The attention to detail, rhythm and fluency which comes through making pots in batches is, in a sense, learning the grammar of clay.

I also have an exciting, but daunting project on the horizon. It is time to finally think about re-building my loved and trusted soda kiln after 10 years of hard work. My soda-firings take their toll on both the kiln and the potter! But there will be more about that in the next Kiln Diary.
