Kiln Diary #20
WINTER COLLECTION GOING LIVE
SATURDAY 26th NOVEMBER at 7pm, UK time
I often describe my pieces as survivors. The smallest, most fragile pots are particularly vulnerable and can have a turbulent journey through the firing. Perched precariously on hand-rolled balls of wadding they can move, even topple over when hit with the jet of soda. Occasionally they can touch one another leaving behind a soft, distinctive mark. Our affectionate non-technical term for this is kissing!
After the last few months of making large exhibition pieces, I have been enjoying working on some groups of hand-sized pots. Teabowls, Cups, Pod Forms and Keeper Vessels have been the starting point for my Winter Collection sitting alongside larger signature pieces.
Finding the beauty in small everyday objects is one of the special qualities of ceramic forms that I love. These intimate vessels allow us to explore their surface landscape by tracing the path of the flame and soda whilst feeling the contours and weight of the form gently cupped in our hand.
I enjoy receiving messages from people who often describe how my pieces continue to give pleasure over time as they discover subtle nuances of colour and texture in different moments of the day. Often catching glimpses of them by chance in the shifting patterns of light and shadow on a table, windowsill or shelf.
My Winter vessels have elemental tones of smokey black, umber and grey giving way to flashes of electric blue, lemon and orange. The online collection will include some larger pieces with copper rich, darkly carved interiors and drawn surfaces from Guardians to Conical and Folded Rim vessels. The exhibition will be going live on Saturday 26th November at 7pm, UK time. I do hope that you will enjoy this range of new work.
